Russell Whitmore, a 19-year-old sophomore majoring in fine arts, received an invitation to paint a mural for the African American Museum of Art in Dallas. The museum contacted him directly after seeing his recent work, which he produced in his dorm room.

Whitmore has amassed more than 8,000 social media followers. His initial viral post, a photograph of a sculpture painting he created in his room at Alvarez Hall, recorded approximately 2.5 million views on Instagram. He began posting his work in late high school, but the account gained substantial traction in the last year.

The artist cites his social media presence as the primary source for his professional connections. He states that most of his exhibition opportunities and commission requests arrive through his online platform. These digital connections led to the Dallas museum's outreach, where curators asked him to paint a mural to showcase in their gallery.

Whitmore’s artistic style has shifted over the past two to three years. He describes his earlier work as personal self-expression. His current pieces are religious in nature, aiming to convey specific messages to individual viewers. He notes that his growing faith and his decision to treat art as a career developed simultaneously.

His primary influence is Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Italian Renaissance polymath. Whitmore focuses on painting sculptures, a medium that requires extensive research. He spends significant time in the library reviewing books to gather reference material before beginning a new piece.

The student transitioned from photography to painting during his senior year of high school. A teacher in his photography class provided him with canvases, encouraging him to continue painting on the side. He now considers painting his primary medium for storytelling.

Whitmore often finds himself the youngest artist in professional settings. He attended the Dallas museum exhibition as the junior-most participant. He describes his dorm room as a creative sanctuary where the large paintings on the walls prevent him from feeling isolated.

The artist maintains a consistent presence on Instagram under the handle @rewhitmorejr. He uses the platform to connect with a wider audience and secure new projects.
