A New York City federal court will hear sentencing arguments on Tuesday for three brothers who were found guilty last month of drugging and sexually assaulting women. The defendants, Oren Alexander, Alon Alexander, and their brother Tal Alexander, face the possibility of life in prison. The men were convicted in March of 10 counts, including conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and sex trafficking by force.
Federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York requested that the judge impose life sentences on each of the three defendants. In a sentencing memorandum, the prosecution stated that more than 70 women came forward with reports of abuse. The prosecutors argued that the brothers used their wealth, social influence, and professional connections to select their victims. The defense attorneys, who have maintained the men are innocent, are asking for a 15-year sentence for each man.
The trial concluded after 11 women testified that they were lured by promises of parties and travel, then drugged and assaulted over a period of several years. Six of those women were part of the formal accusation. The defense has contested the prosecution's narrative, describing the sexual encounters as consensual. The lawyers argued that the women were partly motivated by the prospect of financial benefits.
During the trial, one victim told the court about an encounter at a New York City club. She testified that she lost control of her body after consuming a drink provided by Alon Alexander. The woman said that when she woke up, both men were naked in a bed. She described trying to get up repeatedly, only for Alon Alexander to push her back down. When she told him she did not want to have sex, he replied, “Ya lo hiciste.”
Deanna Paul, the attorney for Tal Alexander, delivered a final argument that challenged the consistency of the victims' accounts. She told the court that the stories had been rehearsed. “Todas las historias estaban ensayadas,” Paul said. “Están buscando dinero.” The defense conceded that the brothers sometimes behaved insensitively toward the women but denied that any of them committed rape or sexual assault.
The three men previously worked as luxury real estate agents. They are scheduled to appear in court this Tuesday for the sentencing phase. The judge will weigh the prosecutor's recommendation for life imprisonment against the defense's request for 15 years before determining the final terms of their sentences.
