Manchester United supporters turned on their team and staff on Sunday after a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. The loss extended the club’s worst start to a league season in 40 years. Fans cheered as manager Michael Carrick left the pitch, then booed the players as they walked back to the tunnel.
The reaction marked a shift in the relationship between the club and its base. Historically, United fans have reserved their anger for managers or individual players. Sunday’s response targeted the entire hierarchy, from the Glazer family owners to the current playing squad.
The team’s attacking struggles are central to the crisis. Since Cristiano Ronaldo left in November 2022, United have lacked a consistent goalscorer. Rasmus Hojlund was signed as a long-term solution but was sent back to Italy after a poor spell. Benjamin Sesko arrived in the summer of 2025 for a high fee, but injuries have kept him from the field during this slump.
In Sesko’s absence, the club has used wide players as strikers and placed Bruno Fernandes in a false nine role. Fernandes, who won the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award for leading the Premier League in assists, has been forced to play with his back to goal. This setup limits his ability to direct the play around him. Currently, eight players in the league have more goals than United’s top scorer, Bryan Mbeumo, who has four.
Ownership and recruitment decisions are also under fire. The Glazer family bought into the club in 2005, and critics argue that long-serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson and CEO David Gill masked structural issues until Ferguson retired in 2013. In the 13 years since, United have signed 75 players. Current CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox face particular scrutiny after the summer window.
Defender Lisandro Martinez, who helped Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final, publicly criticized Wilcox after a loss to Atletico Madrid. Martinez complained about a lack of squad investment. The failure to sign a left-back was a major point of contention, as Lewis Hall of Newcastle United was linked with a move until the final day of the window.
Tension also exists between the manager and the squad’s star. Fernandes criticized Carrick’s tactics after a loss to Como in the Champions League. He was booed off the pitch Sunday despite not playing. At 32, Fernandes remains the team’s most impactful player, but his future at the club is uncertain. Reports suggest the Saudi Pro League and Galatasaray are interested in signing him.
The club’s tactical identity remains unclear. The famous "attack, attack, attack" chant defined the club’s history under Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson. Recent managers have struggled to impose a consistent style. Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation confused players, while Ralf Rangnick described the club as needing "open-heart surgery."
Gary Neville, a former United defender, suggested on Sky Sports on Sunday that some current players lack professionalism. He stated, "There are a few of them that are not that professional." The next step for the club is to determine a tactical approach and a leadership structure that can restore order before the season progresses further.
