The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the 2026-27 season with a perfect record and high expectations, but that momentum hit a sharp turn on Sunday night. The team defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 108-101, yet the victory came at a steep physical cost to its starting backcourt.

General Manager Sam Presti confirmed on Monday that guard Jalen Williams will undergo surgery for a dislocated left ankle and a fractured fibula. Presti also announced that guard Cason Wallace requires surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Both players are expected to be out for several months.

The injuries occurred at different points in the game. Williams suffered his injury late in the fourth quarter during a drive to the basket and was removed on a stretcher. Wallace exited in the first quarter and did not return to the floor. The visual impact of the moment was immediate, with star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tearing up on the court after the final whistle.

These absences create a major defensive void for a team that has led the league in defensive rating for two consecutive seasons. Last year, the Thunder relied on four perimeter players who were recent All-Defensive honorees. Summer trades for Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins already reduced that number. The injuries to Williams and Wallace leave Alex Caruso as the primary elite perimeter defender, a role the team typically manages carefully to preserve him for the playoffs.

Williams missed 49 regular-season games last year due to wrist surgery and hamstring issues, playing just 107 minutes in the postseason. Wallace recently signed a five-year, $139 million contract extension. With both guards out, the Thunder must rely on the depth of Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain to support Gilgeous-Alexander on the wing.

The team has financial tools to address the gap. Presti indicated the Thunder will likely receive a $15 million disabled player exception, which allows them to sign a player in the final year of his contract. The team also holds three trade exceptions totaling $38.3 million and seven tradeable first-round picks. However, using more than $6.9 million of the exception would push the team over the second apron threshold.

Analysts suggest the Thunder may look at lower-cost options such as Herb Jones of the New Orleans Pelicans or Justin Champagnie of the Washington Wizards. Jones offers defensive impact similar to Williams, while Champagnie brings a personal rivalry element against San Antonio. The Clippers' Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn, who were involved in the collision that ended Williams' night, are also in contract years and represent potential targets.
