Lucie Kon has received a payout of more than £400,000 from the BBC after claiming she was victimized and forced out of the corporation. The settlement, partly funded by the license fee, does not admit liability. The broadcaster refused to apologize or label Kon a victim of antisemitism.

Kon left the BBC in April, 19 days after winning an Oscar for her work. She had previously won an Emmy, a BAFTA, and other honors while working on programs including Panorama, Today, BBC Breakfast, and Storyville. She alleges her professional treatment changed rapidly after the October 7 attacks in Israel.

In the weeks following the attacks, Kon messaged a colleague on WhatsApp to discuss the events in Israel. The colleague responded by telling Kon that “Zionists” were evil. Kon described the remark as tasteless and noted the colleague treated the two groups as if they were the same. Later, another colleague told Kon that if she referred to Hamas as terrorists, she was required to call Israel a terrorist state as well.

Kon helped establish an internal WhatsApp group for Jewish employees and wrote to then-Director General Tim Davie. She proposed producing a film about the October 7 attacks. A manager initially supported the project but stated it needed to “contextualize why Hamas did what they did.” When Kon explained the film was intended as a straightforward account, her manager’s manager told her she could no longer oversee it because she was “partial” and “because you’re Jewish.”

Kon raised a formal grievance, but the BBC did not uphold her allegations. She was told some colleagues did not remember the comments and that the decision regarding the film was based on concerns for her mental health. Her appeal was also unsuccessful. During the appeal process, the BBC moved the colleague involved to a different location and restricted Kon from traveling, commissioning, or speaking on behalf of the corporation.

By December, Kon’s health deteriorated, and she took stress-related sick leave. After returning, she applied for a newly created position but was rejected and made redundant in April. She subsequently brought unfair dismissal proceedings against the BBC. Kon is the first known person to receive a settlement from the broadcaster after alleging antisemitic behavior among colleagues.

A BBC spokesperson stated that the corporation’s processes did not uphold any of Kon’s allegations of antisemitism. The statement acknowledged shortcomings and the personal impact on Kon, noting she was a valued member of staff with many years of dedicated service.
